My mission is to provide you with personalized, high-quality skin care. I am dedicated to improving and maintaining your quality of life by addressing your dermatologic concerns. I will never claim to know it all, but we can find answers together or I can help get you to someone that can help you.
Physician assistants (PAs) in dermatology evaluate, diagnose and treat a broad variety of conditions that are treated both medically and surgically. We also perform screening exams, preventive care and education for dermatologic patients and families. Building on our primary-care training and experience, PAs are trained in dermatology in a variety of ways. Most dermatology PAs are trained in the clinic by the collaborating dermatologist and together the physician -PA team will decide the practice style, collaboration agreement, and delegation of services which they find appropriate for their practice.
Most PAs work autonomously within a dermatology office much like a staff dermatologist seeing a wide range of medical, surgical and cosmetic patients but always with the support of a board certified or board eligible dermatologist. PAs get additional education through their required CME hours, attendance at AAD, SDPA and other dermatology based conferences, tumor boards, dermatology grand rounds and self-study courses. Some PAs hold a master’s degree in PA studies with a concentration in dermatology. Many PAs lecture at university PA programs and offer dermatology rotations to PA students; some are dermatology clinical preceptors to family practice residents and nurse practitioner students.
Originally from El Paso, Texas I left at 17 years of age to join the United States Air Force(USAF). I wanted to see the world. Well I saw Lackland AFB in San Antonio for Basic Training-not so much fun! I then visited Lowry AFB, in Denver for technical training on F-16 maintenance. I remember when I learned I was going to fix F-16’s during basic training-I thought it was a gun...LOL! I then went to "VIVA" Las Vegas and Nellis AFB--more training. After all of that, my first duty assignment was Luke AFB in Glendale, Az. Let me tell you that flight line in the middle of the summer--muy CALIENTE’! I was then assigned to S. Korea for 1 year--remote assignment. The loooooonnnnnnnggggggggest year of my life. It was a remote tour so I was without my wife. This was pre internet/cellphone-no skype, video chatting, emails, texts. Long distance phone calls were expensive...snail mail(thank you USPS), irregular 5 minute morale calls, short wave radio messages were the way to communicate and kept me sane! This was my AHA moment. I decided medicine was to be my calling. When I returned to Luke AFB in 1991, I worked during the day and went to school at night. I think I attended every college in the Phoenix area. I remember one summer taking 30 days leave to attend summer term courses. In 1996 I was selected to the first Inter-Service Physician Assistant Program at Ft. Sam Houston, Tx. I joined my brothers and sisters from the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, UT San Antonio for a rigorous program. I passed the coursework and rotations at BAMC and local troop medical clinics. I moved to MacDill AFB, Tampa, FL. It was one of the best years of my life. I was learning and we were welcoming our first born. I earned my Masters of Physician Assistant Studies from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. I passed my boards(PAs are tested on all body systems) then started practicing family medicine at Cannon AFB, NM where I welcomed my second son(UofA graduate) and had a great humanitarian medical duty to the Dominican Republic. We moseyed back to Arizona, this time to Davis-Monthan(DM) AFB,a humanitarian to Ecuador and still in family medicine (they see all dermatology problems first and then send out as needed). Hijo numero tres was born here(UofA student) This was also where I met Dr. Kathy Orlick. We lived houses apart on DM, AFB and as busy as she was with her family and completing her Dermatology residency at the U of A, she brought us cookies when we were moving in. I put the bug in her ear to consider hiring me if she ever opened up a practice. I then went back to where I started my Air Force career, Luke AFB. Thru family medicine and teledermatology I continued to increase my dermatology knowledge. I had another medical humanitarian temporary duty, this time to Guatemala. I completed my USAF career after 22 years and in 2008 joined Foothills Dermatology & Facial Plastic Surgery with Dr. Kathy Orlick and Dr. Jerry Olson. It was great. I was used to moving every 3-4 years and finally was able to stay put for 11 years. I was part of the Ironwood Dermatology family with Dr's Fiona Behr, Michael Christopher, Robyn Glaesser, Michelle Goedken, Carlos Rodriguez and Colin Trout; NP's Shawn Mckissick, Liz Benzie, Lindsay Jones, , PA Nikki Stoker, Certified Laser Tech Caitlyn McCormick, Kathy Motley, Vanessa Ruiz and the AWESOME staff!!! But 2 years later I found my way back to my hometown of EL Paso Texas! I have joined a great office(early 2020)- Mountain View Dermatology where I get the privilege to work Westside, NorthEast and East side clinic locations. I get to work with Dr's Richard Vinson, Mark Peake, Martin Giandoni, Craig Maddox, Samuel Almquist, NP Frank Celis, PA Yessenia Callender and our great staff! The latest and greatest update(late 2023) is going back to work with Dr. Kathy Orlick, along with Dr. Mindy Powell and PA Karin Myers at Foothills Dermatology. I will have the honor of providing every other Friday and Saturday clinic care. I love what I do and have been lucky to have met many wonderful patients, coworkers, providers, representatives. I have been able to provide care in many medical settings to include family medicine, occupational medicine, flight medicine, urgent care, women's clinic. Each practice has molded my style to be considerate to patient needs and appreciate various aspects of care. At the end of the day, skincare like everything is a partnership and I do not dictate how things will be done. I take into account the variables and individuality of every patient and I offer guidance and promise to embark on the journey with you. I hope to continue current relationships and look forward to creating new ones. Let me help you with your dermatologic needs and VIVA la Piel!
Espero conocerte y atender tu problema.
What do you do when you hope to see 75 and are 50 something? You start writing stuff down so that others can be helped!!!!!!!!
